Ken Cloke and a small group of colleagues founded Mediators Beyond Borders with the idea that mediators volunteering their skills around the world could enable a more ‘peace able ‘ world.  Nine years and 12 projects later, there are many lessons that mediators working on projects around the world have gathered.  MBB has accumulated a trove of insights, policies and practices for working cross-culturally, and this webinar will share a subset identified as most relevant for ACR members.  Using case studies from Liberia, Sierra Leone & Kenya the presenters will highlight how a range of processes may be applied in communities both at home and afar to prevent conflict and support the peaceful integration of diverse populations.

Crisis Negotiation: From Suicide to Terrorism Intervention

Abstract: This chapter uses an account of a real-life crisis negotiation to explore what is know about these high-stakes, emotion-fueled interactions.

Snippet: The instant impression (e.g., first 30 seconds) and opening gambit (e.g., 5-10 minutes) of a negotiator is critical to how a crisis incident becomes framed and how it then unfolds. This period of the interaction is typically characterized by extreme emotions and mistrust, with perpetrators struggling for dominance and protecting their face rather than exchanging information or bargaining (Donohue, Kaufman, Smith, & Ramesh, 1991).

#RenoACR15: Thinking About Our Thinking on Mediator Ethics"

Wheeler and Press have spent years thinking about mediator ethics. In this session, they will lead a discussion drawn from ethical dilemmas posed by ACR mediators which have been collected in the months preceding the conference. In addition to using the Model Standards to resolve the dilemmas, Press and Wheeler will reflect on what the posed dilemmas say about mediator thinking about ethics and ethical dilemmas.
