It’s tiring …

listening to all of the name calling and finger pointing that is going on in the world.

What happened to respectful dialogue?

How are we supposed to address our nation’s issues if we show such disrespect for each other??

People can disagree. That’s a given. It’s human nature to have different points of view.

But does that mean that we have to be so rude and attack each other?

I don’t think so.

So policymakers and leaders, here are some thoughts on how to show simple and basic respect for each other:

  • Listen harder
  • Be considerate
  • Show kindness
  • Go out of your way
  • Preserve dignity
  • Encourage sharing of ideas
  • Praise more frequently than you criticize
  • Be open to criticism from others
  • Be inclusive
  • Keep your promises

The great part about respect is that it’s FREE. It doesn’t cost anything to incorporate this behavior into your daily life.

And even more profound is that respect is a two way street. In order to earn the respect of others, you should demonstrate it first.

Remember that showing respect is a reflection of your character … not theirs!
