This year’s Association for Conflict Resolution (ACR) national conference features more than 120 speakers on diverse conflict resolution topics in over 75 sessions. Join more than 400 other conflict resolution practitioners this October in Reno, Nevada from October 7-10.

Here is a brief glimpse of two of the many exciting sessions that are being offered:

Hostage & Crisis Negotiator vest

Learning the Skills of Crisis & Hostage Negotiators

Speaker:

Jeff Thompson, Detective & Hostage Negotiation Team Member, NYPD

Overview:

New York City is the birthplace of police hostage negotiations and home to a special team of officers which responds to those calls where officers encourage parties to talk. Police hostage negotiators negotiate with the unknown on the scene where parties are emotionally charged and audiences are common. This presentation will review the New York Police Department's Hostage Negotiation Team's (HNT) past and discuss criteria for selecting negotiators, the composition of the team, how police negotiations work, the role of emotions and rationality in hostage negotiations, and how negotiators build rapport under stress.

Problem Solving for One: Conflict Coaching and ADR Innovations

Overview:

This session provides participants with an overview of Problem Solving for 1 (PS1), most frequently cited as a precursor to conflict coaching. In the workplace, PS1 is being used to help people reduce the negative consequences of conflict. PS1 has also spawned other innovations such as computer based software that addresses both interpersonal conflict and provides treatment for mild depression. Family Dispute Resolution for one is an Australian innovation that builds on PS1, providing assistance in addressing family disputes. Uses of PS1 from the workplace to the Space Station will be discussed, and PS1 techniques will be demonstrated with audience participation. NB. Proposed Length This could be done as a short (3 hour) session with mostly demonstrations) or as a full day session with hands-on work with the participants.

Conflict Management in Health Care: Opportunities for Conflict Resolution Specialists

Overview:

Conflict management in US healthcare is a growing industry, with the need for more conflict resolution specialists to engage with this diverse and challenging field. This session will focus on the roles of conflict resolution professionals working as trainers and coaches in the arenas of patient-provider conflicts and provider-provider workplace conflicts. We will introduce approaches and techniques to help experienced conflict management specialists gain better access to and buy-in from health care audiences, with specific examples of what has worked in the presenters’ diverse experiences. The session will be participatory and will help equip participants with training resources for designing their own activities in the future.
