“Pinhole Thinking” … this is one of my favorite new phrases.

What do you see when you look through a pinhole – not much. That’s exactly my point.

“We can’t solve problem by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created it.” Thank-you Albert Einstein for those words of wisdom.

And that’s exactly what happens when people use “pinhole thinking” to try to figure something out.

It’s the same old approach – the same old way. No new ideas. No openness to new information. No new approaches. No consideration of the devil’s advocate position. No thinking outside of the box. No new light coming through that pinhole.

Here’s another way to illustrate my point. This horse is made with 5 matchsticks.

How can you create another horse by moving just one match stick??

Hmm …  that one’s a challenge … if you keep looking at the horse the same way … standing upright.

That’s what pinhole thinking does.

If if you open your mind, you can see it from a different perspective – standing on it’s side.

So, the next time you find yourself trying the same old approach that hasn’t worked the last 5 times you tried it, step back from that pinhole and let the light in.

You may just see a solution from an entirely different point of view.
