Self and Identity in Conflict Resolution Coaching
Issues of self and identity permeate all of human life, but they are particularly important during interpersonal conflict. For this month’s teleseminar, Elizabeth Bader will speak on these issues and the core psychological dynamic which people typically experience during resolution of conflict, known as the IDR cycle. This consists of inflation, deflation and realistic resolution and applies to the dynamics experienced by our coaching clients and parties to a mediation or other negotiation forum. You are welcome to contact Elizabeth at elizabeth@elizabethbader.com to obtain her article in this regard: The Psychology of Mediation: Issues of Self and Identity and the IDR Cycle, 10 Pepperdine Dispute Resolution Law Journal 183 (2010).
Further, to help clients effectively deal with conflict, it is important that we the coaches, mediators and facilitators are sensitive to and skilled in dealing with issues of self and identity. In this regard, this teleseminar will also explore the ways in which working with our own issues of ego, self and identity help us be more effective when dealing with particularly anxious or difficult clients. Specific related reading: “The Psychology of Mediation, Part I: The Mediator's Issues of Self and Identity”, available at http://www.mediate.com/articles/baderE2.cfm
Elizabeth Bader is a leader in the movement to integrate greater psychological understanding into conflict resolution. Her mediation practice includes the successful resolution of complex, multi-party, mass-tort-related litigation, as well as a variety of other disputes. Elizabeth is also the founder of an ABA Committee on the psychology of conflict resolution and the author of the above-noted articles. As a mediator, Elizabeth emphasizes the importance of understanding psychological dynamics between the parties. Similarly, she coaches individuals using a self-inquiry model of self-exploration. More information on Elizabeth’s work may be found at www.elizabethbader.com/events.html.
NOTE: Advanced Practitioners (ACR) who attend this teleseminar in its entirety, qualify for one hour credit.

He has written extensively about barriers to the negotiated resolution of conflict and how to overcome them, ethnic conflicts both violent and non-violent, and divorce bargaining. In his latest book Bargaining with the Devil: When to Negotiate, When to Fight, he addresses the most challenging conflicts — when you are facing an adversary you don’t trust, who may harm you, or may even be evil. Mnookin provides tools for confronting devils of all kinds — in international relations, in business and in family conflicts.
