Culture influences the way in which we establish rapport, make the pitch, and close the sale or deal. Visuals, demeanor, body language, attitude, and content that is impressive in one culture can be unimpressive, confusing or even offensive in another.

She has more than 22 years of experience in training, marketing, supplier management, and general corporate and consultancy management.

Conflict Resolution Skills Across Borders & Boardroom: June 14, 21 & 28, Monday 6-9:30 pm
Ms. Hummel has developed an adaptation to the Western Facilitative Mediation Model into a paradigm that more closely aligns Non-Western Cultures. She further adapts the paradigm to the specific culture of the participants. Utilizing this methodology helps those trained in the concept to assist in avoiding conflict and when that conflict does occur, participants are better prepared to resolve it effectively.

Guest Speaker: Mark Kirwin is a University of California certified mediator and a California Superior Court appointed mediator, arbitrator and judge pro tem, with over 18 years of conflict resolution experience. His multinational experience includes extensive travel in S.E. Asia, India and South America performing humanitarian field work as the founder of the Kirwin International Relief Foundation and is the Asian Coordinator for Mediator Beyond Borders.

14. MWI's TRAIN THE TRAINER INSTITUTE - June 3 and 4, 2010

MWI's Train the Trainer Institute is a two-day seminar designed to prepare experienced mediators to become effective mediation trainers and role-play coaches.

Since 1994, MWI has been a leader in professional mediation training. MWI has designed and conducted over seventy-five 20 to 40 hour basic and advanced mediation training programs for range of corporate, institutional and non-profit clients such as Coca Cola Enterprises, Bose, General Motors, the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and for thousands of attorneys, mental health providers and other professionals.

TOPICS INCLUDE
* Program Design and Marketing - How to define and meet the needs of participants; Staying focused on goals and outcomes; The logistics of putting on a successful training; Programmatic and administrative issues; Internal and external program promotion; Translating your mediation experience into basic concepts that trainees can internalize and practice; Delegating pre and post training responsibilities within the training team; Designing and analyzing pre-workshop diagnostic forms.

* Delivery - Presenting concepts with impact; Selecting and using different delivery media; How to be a facilitator, leader, coordinator (all at the same time); Setting up the room; Working with groups and individuals simultaneously; Facilitating skill-building exercises; On being clear and purposeful; Fostering group participation and self-reflection; Coaching role-plays and providing feedback to trainees; Dealing with difficult participants.

* Evaluation and Follow-up - Designing effective feedback and evaluation methodologies; Delivering feedback to participants during and after the program; incorporating lessons learned into future programs; and more.

METHODOLOGY

MWI's Train the Trainer Institute utilizes an interactive and hands on skill-building approach to learning. Participants will be given opportunities to make group presentations and coach simulated role-play sessions. Each trainer in training will receive individual coaching and tailored feedback.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

This program is geared for experienced mediators who have an interest in developing their capacity to design and deliver effective mediation training programs.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE PREREQUISITES

* Mediators must have completed 40-hours of formal mediation training (or meet their state's requirement);

* Mediators must have experience with at least 10 cases in the past two years.

TRAINERS and COACHES

Charles "Chuck" Doran is an experienced mediator, trainer, and ombudsman specializing in the resolution of business and workplace disputes. Charles is the founder of Mediation Works Incorporated (MWI), a dispute resolution service and training organization in Boston, Massachusetts. A mediator since 1992, he is a member of the CPR Dispute Resolution Panel of Distinguished Neutrals, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination (MCAD), Mediation Works Incorporated (MWI), the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) Dispute Resolution Panel, the Harvard Mediation Program and the United States Postal Service REDRESS I and REDRESS II Mediation Panels. In addition to his mediation work, Charles works nationally and internationally as a dispute resolution trainer and consultant with corporate, governmental and non-profit clients including Coca-Cola Enterprises, General Motors, Bose Corporation, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the Harvard Negotiation Project at Harvard Law School. He was a presenter at the Mediation Pedagogy Conference which was held by Negotiation Pedagogy at the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School in May 2010. Charles has also served as a
teaching assistant on multiple occasions with Professor Roger Fisher at Harvard Law School's Program of Instruction for Lawyers Negotiation Workshop. In 1993, Charles completed a Specialization in Negotiation and Dispute Resolution at the Program on Negotiation and chaired two regional ADR Conferences in 1997 and 1999. Charles served as a member of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Standing Committee on Dispute Resolution and was Chair of the Qualifications Subcommittee. Charles is an arbitrator with the Massachusetts Bar Association's Fee Arbitration Board and is a past president of the Association for Conflict Resolution (formerly the Society of Professionals in Dispute Resolution), New England Chapter.

Diane Levin is a dispute resolution professional and attorney. A mediator since 1995, Diane has conducted mediations in disputes in litigation or for private clients in tort, workplace, real estate, business, probate, and family matters, and serves on numerous mediation panels, including the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Before becoming a mediator, Diane practiced labor, employment, municipal, and tort law. An experienced trainer of mediation and negotiation skills, Diane has taught thousands of people in corporate, institutional, and governmental settings, including MWI's programs for Coca-Cola Enterprises, Bose Corporation, and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, and in rule of law programs for USAID supporting judicial reform in Eastern Europe. She also serves as a negotiation coach to entrepreneurs; demystifies digital technology for ADR professionals; and has advised mediators and mediation programs around the globe, including Meta-Culture, Bangalore's premiere dispute management consulting group. To promote non-adversarial alternatives to litigation, Diane has served on several boards, including four years as an officer of the Association for Conflict Resolution's New England Chapter. She is also a past appointee to the Massachusetts Trial Court Standing Committee on Dispute Resolution, which she continues to advise on web media, and was recently appointed a Fellow of the Massachusetts Bar Foundation, serving on the IOLTA Grant Advisory Committee which directs funding toward non-profits
improving the administration of justice. As a writer, Diane contributes regularly to numerous online and print publications on dispute resolution and negotiation, publishes the internationally respected
MediationChannel.com, a site covering news and commentary on ADR at the intersection of law and social science, and is currently writing a book on social media for dispute resolution professionals.

Also in attendance will be role-play coaches from the mediation and dispute resolution training communities.

16. ACR Teleconference: Developing Conflict Competence

Conflict Competence is the ability to develop and use cognitive, emotional, and behavioral skills that enhance productive outcomes of conflict while reducing the likelihood of escalation or harm. It also involves developing conflict norms for teams and improving conflict cultures and systems in organizations.

In this teleconference, authors Tim Flanagan and Craig Runde will discuss how to develop Conflict Competence and describe how it can enhance the quality of relationships, boost creativity, and produce higher quality decisions.

Tim Flanagan and Craig Runde are authors of Becoming a Conflict Competent Leader (2006), Building Conflict Competent Teams (2008), and Developing Your Conflict Competence (2010). Both work at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, FL. Tim is Director of Custom Programs and leads the design, development and delivery of projects for corporate, government, and nonprofit clients. Craig, Director of the Center for Conflict Dynamics, oversees manages the Conflict Dynamics Profile assessment instrument and other Center work. Both regularly instruct, coach, consult, and speak on the topics of leadership, conflict, teams, and other organizational development issues.

The Werner Institute for Negotiation and Dispute Resolution at Creighton University School of Law welcomes applications for a full-time faculty position in Conflict Resolution to begin August 2010. As Assistant Professor of Conflict Resolution, the successful candidate will teach graduate courses in Conflict Analysis and Dispute Resolution. The position will also involve serving as an academic advisor to students, collaborating with and advising colleagues and the Director in development of curriculum, workshops, and training, engaging in academic research activities, maintaining a professional profile through research and/or professional service, and participating in community service.

The Werner Institute for Negotiation and Dispute Resolution provides an interdisciplinary program leading to master's degrees and graduate certificates in negotiation and dispute resolution for students from a variety of fields as well as mid-career professionals. Two separate academic programs—one on campus, and one online-based hybrid program—are offered by the Institute, and the successful candidate will be expected to teach in both programs.
