Are you always aware of the message you are sending someone while you are talking OR listening to them? I’m not. If I was going to be honest about it, I would say nobody is fully aware of it all the time. This isn’t really new news to anyone, but something that has caught my attention in the last week.
This week I read a post by Jeff Thompson…

In the last week, I found myself stumbling on a variety of articles covering peace programs and conflict resolution efforts in the Middle East and Africa. The majority of the articles focused on organizations driven by democratic values that employed an array of intervention practices in order to cultivate and/or preserve democratization in volatile countries within these regions.
For example, the Carter
Center was previously involved in the observation of Palestinian Elections. Acting…

As the sang goes, never discuss politics or religion. Today, I am going to break that rule. One cannot ignore the amount of political propaganda going on. Political ideologies are spewed out for all to hear in rallies hoping to reach the all important undecided vote. I often find myself fighting a battle on the inside on which side to listen to and support. Each side often has some valid points, but some ideas make me cringe a bit. I want everyone to have a fair shake at opportunities, but why…

I am currently traveling in Australia and while in the airport in New York City, to pass time I was looking through the magazine shop for some reading material while on the short, easy 13+ hour flight. Yes, that's AFTER the 5+ hour flight to Los Angeles.
So, while deciding to get People or Star Magazine which will let me know how Heidi Montag is doing (don't know who she is? Good!) and what Kim Kardashian is up to, I came across in the best seller section the book

Have you ever asked the question, “How are you doing today?” What do you expect from the answer? Do you expect the usual response of, “I’m doing ok,” or “I’m good, you?” I think we are all guilty of asking questions and hoping for an answer that we don’t have to talk about further. What would happen if you asked someone how they were doing and they gave you an honest response?
I…

Greetings from the 'Land Down Under'!
While traveling in Australia, primarily for holidays, those who know me know I always manage to do some work too! With that said, last week I gave a talk at Southern Cross University's Lismore campus which was also broadcasted to two other campuses (hooray for technology!).
The topic was on basic nonverbal verbal communication- how to use it properly and also how to identify certain gestures used by others. I will not go into the…

September’s webinar on Citizens & Collaboration by Joan Sabott offered an insightful look at the power of collaborative dialogue processes in highly contentious conflicts. Using her work on road sharing issues between motorists and cyclists, as well as local impacts to Colorado communities, she touched on five elements I feel are incredibly important in integrative processes for conflict resolution. The five elements are:…

Why get into Mediation? Most of you reading this have probably asked yourself this at least once. If your experience was similar to mine, you also had to answer questions like "what is mediation? So your like a judge or something? What can you do with that?" Nearly two years ago, I had to ask myself these questions. I knew a little about mediation through negotiation and law classes I took in undergrad. However, I could barely answer the same questions my family and… Continue
