Mediating at Lakeside Mediation Center

I've been corresponding recently with Eric Galton a very successful mediator in Austin, Texas, who carries on his practice at the Lakeside Mediation Center. I first learned about this wonderful location through an article in the Texas Bar Review and was enthused to hear from Eric about his personal experiences mediating for many years in such a beautiful setting.

I have said in previous posts that it is a shame that the ADR scholarship hasn't given much serious consideration to the… Continue

Is Conflict Always about the Interaction?

This new blog post, available here, challenges a belief held by many mediators.  Many mediators believe they can adjust their approach according to whether the interaction between the parties is important or not.  This blog argues that all conflict, regardless of the subject, is about interaction at its core.

Experiencing Your Conflict

In previous ConflictMastery™ Quest(ions) blogs I have discussed somatic symptoms of conflict. Today’s post is about what we experience internally that we may or may not show externally. That is, there are ways we are aware of - that others do not necessarily observe - about things going on for us in our body, heart, and brain. Some signs, of course, are evident and will be considered in this discussion.

Experiencing our conflict – the subject of this week’s blog - relates also to what…

'Well,' said Owl, 'the customary procedure in such cases is as follows.'

'What does Crustimoney Proseedcake mean?' said Pooh. 'For I am a Bear of Very Little Brain, and long words Bother me.'

'It means the Thing to Do.'

'As long as it means that, I don't mind,' said Pooh humbly.

Bouncing Back

In the aftermath of interpersonal conflicts some of us bounce back quicker than others. There are lots of reasons for this. For instance, as discussed in previous blogs, we may have unresolved issues and emotions that continue to haunt us. Other variables that influence our resilience are how we manage stress, how we process our feelings, our general pessimistic versus optimistic approaches to life, the degree of lingering hurt and other emotions due to the dispute, and so on. Some other…

Conflict, Sherry Turkle, and the RPM

The Reasonable Person Model (RPM, see previous posts) is a model of human nature predicated, in part, on our relationship with information and, more particularly, how our voracious human appetite for information affects our reasonableness. In a nutshell, as a species, we love information but our tendency to seek out and consume information drains our attentional capacities. The lack of our ability to direct our attention, which is difficult to self recognize at times, can be very obvious to… Continue

Positions vs. Interests

In the field of Alternative Dispute Resolution, mediators, among other things, help people in dispute come to a mutually acceptable resolution about issues they do not agree on. Each party typically holds a disparate perspective from the other on what constitutes an appropriate settlement. By the time they get to talk it out in the mediation process to see if they can resolve matters, they have often become entrenched in their positions and the relationship is suffering.

Positions…
