I feel fortunate. I’ve never (so far) lived in a country ravaged by war, and I can honestly say I hope I never do.
That feeling of gratitude was magnified recently, when I talked with an acquaintance who was raised in Kuwait and was living there during the Gulf War. Maybe I was too young to notice the reality (I was about 16 at the time), but I thought the Gulf War was a pretty open-and-shut case with few casualties.
Apparently, I was wrong.…

For the past month, eight out of ten full-time faculty members at the General Theological Seminary in New York City have refused to teach, alleging a pattern of harassment and bullying behavior by the school's dean, Kurt Dunkle. The GTS trustees subsequently deemed the striking faculty ("The GTS 8") to have resigned on September 29. Negotiations between the two sides reached an impasse last week when…

Rory McIlroy is the #1 golf player in the world.
But he has decided to skip two golf tournaments in next couple of weeks. Why? Injury? Family reasons?
Nope … it’s because he is preparing for a trial.
That, in a nutshell, is the price of conflict that escalates to litigation.
In the spring of 2013, Rory left Horizon Sports Management, about six months after signing a contract with Nike, which is reported to be a 9-figure endorsement…

The State of Ohio is the most recent large organization to provide its employees with the option of using transformative mediation. You can read more about the program here.

Although this was written in 2011, this is still a big step for Brasil. The national police have a history of being violent and overbearing. This is interesting! I'm wondering how this complimented the Pacification of the Favelas (UPP).

I’ve always been a big fan of scheduling things. I’m even one of the few people left who use an actual paper calendar to schedule things–mostly because I’m addicted to turning a page and seeing all my “to-do’s” written down.
So, it’s probably in my nature to bring the idea of scheduling into my work. In fact, for clients dealing with grief, I often recommend they “schedule” their grief, so they can still function in daily life. For so many, grief strikes at…

One of the things that can lead to conflict has to do with unmet expectations. For instance, we had hoped that another person would have said or done something that reflects their care and concern for us; they excluded us from a gathering or decision; they had something we wanted and knew it was important to us; or they didn’t provide their support or were unreliable about a matter. These and other examples of having expectations work both ways, of course, and we could have let someone else…

The U.S. and Brazil have resolved a decade-long trade battle over subsidies Washington provided to U.S. cotton growers.
The agreement announced Oct. 1 resolves a bitter trade fight that had strained relations between the two countries since 2002, when Brazil brought a case against the U.S. charging that the U.S. cotton subsidies were a violation of global trade rules. The World Trade Organization (WTO) ruled in Brazil’s favor, and the U.S. had been forced to…

I actually had a different topic in mind for today’s post, but that one will have to wait. Yesterday, I saw an article in the paper about a survey published by Highlights magazine called “The State of the Kid” and I just had to write about it.
If you are the parent of a child between the ages of 6 and 12 (or younger), you need to read the…
