What the @#$#@ is Mediation?

(Originally posted at Absolution Mediation)

In February I had the opportunity to speak at Ignite Waterloo.  Wow...was I nervous!  I had 20 slides that auto-advanced every 15 seconds.  I'm not going to lie, I didn't say everything that I wanted to say in that 5 minutes, but I think my message got across.  Take a…

Legal Overview of Organizational Ombuds on YouTube

Last year, the American Bar Association published, "The Organizational Ombudsman: Origins, Roles and Operations--A Legal Guide." Since then, the author, attorney Charles Howard, has made multiple appearances to promote his book and the Ombuds profession generally. Nonetheless, most people who might want to hear him speak would have to travel a long way and/or pay an event fee. Fortunately, the Quinnipiac University School…

Update & Explanation On Changes To Mediate.com

Mediate.com has support my blog, www.EnjoyMediation.com, since it started.  Recently I notice how I was unable to log into my favorite feature- the featured blog postings of the week.  No, it was not (solely!) to see if my blog made but rather I think the one of the best ways to keep up to date on the latest mediation news as well as get insight from some of the sharpest mediation…

The Power of an Apology

(Originally posted at Absolution Mediation)

Recently I read an article/blog questioning "How Powerful is an Apology?" We all like to think that when we receive or give an apology, that some sort of healing takes place.  In this…

I happily read this morning that the Ombudsman profession is attempting to not be outdone by the mediation field in regards to publicity. Sure Mediation has the television show "Fairly Legal" (does anyone still watch it?), but now the Ombuds field has Ombuds Day…

Help is needed for IDPs in Cote d'Ivoire.

Hello all! Hope all is well!

This is an informal post, but I am hoping those of you with UN or other IDP agency contacts will heed these words and help to get rapid assistance for the IDPs living in Cote d'Ivoire. I am currently living in Abidjan and have been watching as civil war is breaking out all around me.

There are an estimated at least 30,000 newly displaced persons within Abidjan alone right now (and thousands upon thousands more across the country), because of… Continue

Radiohead and Conflict

Alright, I'm excited...last Friday Radiohead's newest album was released. It's called "King of Limbs" and I downloaded it from their website the first opportunity I got.  If you haven't already figured it out, I'm a fan of them.  So you can imagine my surprise when I loaded it on my Ipod, listened to it on the way to work, and was less then impressed.  Yes, I said it, I was not impressed.  So I talked to my community and… Continue

This week in conflict... February 19th-25th, 2011.

Hello all! Hope everything is well with you!

My internet has been intermittent due to escalating fighting within Abidjan this week, where I am currently living. Due to this, I may have difficulty posting and searching out stories for This Week in Conflict in upcoming weeks.

As always, just a reminder that if you have any information about conflicts (or efforts towards peace) happening each week, I would love your feedback and inclusions. As the weekly…

USIP Losing It's Funding?

The following was sent to me from ACR (I am a member) and thought it is relevant and important to pass it also along here:

As you may know, the U.S. House of Representatives has voted to eliminate funding for the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) for the remainder of the fiscal year as part of a $61 billion package of budget cuts.  We in ACR leadership were shocked by this action and hope for its reversal in the Senate.

USIP was created by Congress in 1984 as a… Continue
