In his book, Kohn describes a school-based environment, where, similar to Covey, students are empowered and conflict is embraced. He writes, “[d]enying students a voice, however, does not make their objections disappear; it just sweeps them under the carpet where people will trip over them – that is, where they will make their presence felt in ways that are less productive than rational argument.” (Kohn 1996, 2006) Kohn also discusses the idea of a constructivist classroom. A constructivist classroom is one in which a teacher becomes a guide and the student is encouraged to employ problem-solving and reflective techniques into his/her learning. Kohn maintains that this idea will allow school administrators to work with students versus simply telling them what to do.
