"What must underlie successful epidemics, in the end, is a bedrock belief that change is possible, that people can radically transform their behavior or beliefs in the face of the right kind of impetus." (258).

I read this book once before the book club and this quote has stuck with me. I believe that people in the world of ADR have a universal belief that change is possible. It is the glue in some ways that has brought many of us to the profession and keeps us here. The question becomes how to we get everyone else on board, right?

From observation our profession has a stickiness factor, we are successful, and people whose lives are touched by conflict resolution remember. The "tipping part" is where I would like to point caution. What would that mean for the ADR field? In some ways, when things become so big so fast, it can lose the quality and meaning of what we do.

I do believe that the ADR field some day will tip. However, I see value in how our profession is moving forward. It may seem slow but from experience, I have met some of the most amazing, honest, hardworking, optimistic people that make this field amazing. It is those people that both individually and as a whole will make this profession do great things and lead us to tip. It may be slow but there is something to be said about doing it right.

I'm glad you posted this quote, because it balances out a quote that really struck me:

"that's why social change is so volatile and so often inexplicable, because it is the nature of all of us to be volatile and inexplicable." (chapter 8- not sure the page number, Im reading it on my phone)

I do believe this book projects a great sense of hope, in the human ability to adapt and transform situations. In my eyes thats what ADR is anyway, a process of transformation. I agree with you Lynsee, perhaps the tipping will come out of the individual and group accomplishments in the ADR field.
