THE ORGANIZATION

The United States Institute of Peace is an independent quasi-federal institution established and funded by the U.S. Congress to:

Prevent and resolve violent international conflict; 
Promote post-conflict stability and development; 
Increase peacebuilding capacity, tools, and intellectual capital.

The Institute accomplishes its mission through direct engagement in peacebuilding efforts around the world, and by empowering others with knowledge, skills, and resources.

SUMMARY

The Director of Studies will position USIP as a leading source of cutting-edge analysis and research related to the prevention, mitigation, and resolution of violent conflicts. She or he will ensure that research and publications advance the strategic priorities of the Institute and its programs, and strengthen Institute-wide coordination in the production, oversight, and dissemination of research and publications. The Director of Studies will contribute to building a culture of excellence at USIP, and to the development of a proactive research agenda that addresses major challenges in peacebuilding and conflict resolution. He or she will also be responsible for developing, strengthening, and coordinating analytic programs of the Center for Applied Research on Conflict (ARC). This newly-created position is intended to enhance USIP’s analytic capacity, visibility, excellence, and impact, and to support USIP’s commitment to better serve core stakeholder audiences, including the US Congress and US Government agencies as well as practitioners and researchers in the fields of conflict resolution and peacebuilding.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and lead major applied research activities to advance the strategic objectives of the Center and the Institute, including through partnerships, formation of research networks, commissioned research, and other means.
  • Guide ARC staff in the development and implementation of analytic programs and projects to advance the strategic priorities of the Center and of USIP.
  • Develop and lead Institute-wide strategies to strengthen the quality and impact of USIP’s research and publications.
  • Lead efforts to build the capacity of USIP staff to conduct rigorous applied research and to publish high quality publications that advance USIP’s mission
  • Manage Institute-wide coordination and support of publications and research in close collaboration with programs.
  • Remain current with research developments in fields relevant to the Center and to USIP’s research priorities and ensure that USIP’s analytic products engage leading debates in relevant fields;
  • Coordinate with External Relations to ensure that USIP’s research achieves a high level of visibility and impact among key stakeholder audiences.
  • Work with programs to develop an annual research and publication plan, describing how these activities will advance program-level and Institute-wide priorities;

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals of countries listed in a U.S. Collective Defense Arrangement per the Department of State. To see a list of those countries, go tohttp://www.state.gov/s/l/treaty/collectivedefense/index.htm
  • Ph.D. degree in the social sciences, relevant humanities disciplines, or international relations/conflict management;
  • Demonstrated track record in the production and publication of high quality research within the scope of USIP priorities; 
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience required;
