Help Increase the Peace Program (HIPP) – Basic:

Is the level 1 training of a 3-level train the trainer in community peacebuilding program. HIPP is a culturally adaptable, grassroots driven program.

 

Date: August 8-10, 2013

 

Time:

August 8th - 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.

August 9th - 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

August 10th - 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

 

Target Audience:

The HIPP Basic training is aimed at community peacebuilders and those who would like to become community peacebuilders.

  • HIPP combines serious reflection on conflict with energetic, fun activities, creating a balance that engages people.
  • It starts with participants' own experiences and teaches skills in the context of real world situations.
  • It builds a heightened awareness among participants of the need to reduce hatred and build understanding among different social groups.
  • It also builds and community based on dialogue and encourages participants to see each other as valuable resources for creating change.
  • It encourages participants to become leaders and address problems in their own communities.

 

Key Content:

  1. How to have “difficult conversations.” (To invite someone to have a conversation about a conflict in a way that they can hear.)
  2. Learn and implement positive, non-violent approaches when faced with conflict.
  3. To consider and understand the effect of power relationships on conflict.
  4. How to use consensus to make decisions.

 

Trainer:

Courtney Burkey is a senior Help Increase the Peace Program trainer. She founded and directed the Jamaica Peace Education Program based on HIPP curriculum in partnership with the Rotary Club of Savanna la Mar, Jamaica. She is Restorative Justice facilitator for Northern Virginia Mediation Service's Restorative Justice Project in partnership with Fairfax County Public Schools. She is a trained mediator in civil, workplace, community, and peer mediation; and a trained challenge course facilitator. Courtney is a peace and conflict resolution specialist who provides training and facilitation services around the country and abroad. Courtney holds a BA in International Affairs from Sweet Briar College, MA in International Relations from the University of Indianapolis, and Graduate Certificate in Conflict Analysis and Resolution: Prevention, Stabilization, and Reconstruction from the School of Conflict Analysis and Resolution, George Mason University.
