Drake University seeks a coordinator of service learning. The person in this position will:
- Provide leadership and oversight of curriculum-based service learning at Drake. Develop appropriate policies and training for community partners, faculty, and students so that all understand the opportunities and responsibilities of students who work within the community and the responsibilities of their supervising partners.
- Support faculty in developing individual service learning courses, community-based research projects, and/or in integrating service learning into the curriculum.
- Provide education (through workshops, model syllabi and assignments, information on web-based resources, etc) on the methods and desired outcomes of service learning, and on the academic foundation and scholarship of service learning.
- Develop and maintain processes to track and evaluate academic and co-curricular service programs including the evaluation of service learning sites and placements, and the assessment of student learning achieved through such programs. Report on the results to the appropriate committees on campus.
- Facilitate partnerships between the community and the university as they relate to service learning and community-based research. Serve as the first point of contact for community partners; coordinate and collaborate with other schools and organizations (for example, Campus Compact) in central Iowa. Communicate service-learning opportunities to students, faculty, and staff.
- Facilitate on-campus communication and collaboration with existing college and school-based service learning programs and with co-curricular and volunteer service programs to foster collaboration in development of curriculum-based approaches to service learning and avoid competition for sites.
- Identify and seek private and public support for service learning. Administer grants that develop service-learning opportunities.
The successful candidate will have the ability to exercise dynamic leadership and to work with faculty, staff, and students in a collaborative environment. The successful candidate will also have experience in service learning programs and/or in community outreach or community service organizations, and a background in the development, implementation, and assessment of service learning courses or community-based research programs.
Excellent writing and verbal communication skills, and strong organizational and interpersonal skills are necessary. A Bachelor’s degree is required, master’s degree or PhD. preferred. Preference, as well, to those with experience in higher education, teaching and/or grant writing.
