Joan will be discussing the role of citizens in collaborative dialogue processes that can impact policy and planning decisions at the city, county and state level and how to involve them effectively in the collaborative process.  Using the work she does with cyclists, motorists and other residents as a case study, Joan will explain the role of collaborative citizen groups in even highly contentious conflicts.

About Joan:

Joan Sabott is currently a Program Manager for CDR Associates (Collaborative Decision Resources) in Boulder, Colorado.  Her work with CDR includes mediation and facilitation of environmental and public policy conflicts and providing mediation and facilitation training services for both CDR public sessions and other customized programs across the United States.

Most recently, Joan has been working with an intra-agency team of National Park Service staff on the Yellowstone Winter Use Environmental Impact Statement, a highly controversial environmental planning process regarding the use of snowmobiles and snow coaches in the park.  Additionally, she has been working with Colorado communities on cyclist and motorist issues.  In many communities, these tensions are at an all-time high and Joan works with these groups to discuss the problems and then to strategize practical strategies for improving safety and cooperation on the roadways.

Additionally, Joan teaches with the Werner Institute online program in the Education specialization.  As a former and current educator and trainer, Joan works with the online students to learn theories and develop skills that can be implemented in the educational sector.
