Sponsored by the Community of Sant' Egidio and the Office of Religious Life at Princeton University

Poverty and Peacemaking will convene local and international religious leaders, scholars, practitioners, community partners, government and agency representatives, students, and philanthropists to think together about foundational and connected issues of shared concern. In particular, our focus will be the role of poverty alleviation as a critical component in the building of peace.

The program will include a plenary session, intimate roundtable discussions that will incorporate a wide interdisciplinary constituency, an opportunity for community service, and an optional prayer service. An important purpose of the conference is to intentionally connect religious and secular constituencies to engage in honest conversation about our shared work.

There will also be an opportunity to learn about Sant’ Egidio’s unique engagement with the poor, and their peacemaking efforts. Following Sant ‘Egidio’s ethos, we will consider the role of friendship and vocation.

Poverty and Peacemaking is the 4th annual Sant’ Egidio gathering in the United States, inspired by theglobal prayer service and conference hosted annually by Sant’ Egidio in Europe. The Community of Sant’ Egidio began in Rome in 1968 and is today a movement of over 60,000 lay people operating in 73 countries throughout the world. Their work includes brokering peace agreements internationally and serving the poor locally.

Princeton University's Office of Religious Life seeks to support all religious traditions in the practice and expression of their faith, and strongly encourages interfaith cooperation. We understand religious life to include intellectual, moral, artistic, and civic life.
