The public university in Halifax has opened a search for an Ombudsperson to serve a student population of 20,000. The position will report to the Provost and work with a joint Ombuds Advisory Council (comprised of representatives from Dalhousie Student Union and Dalhousie University).
Applicants must have a degree (or equivalent combination of training and experience), plus diploma or ample experience in conflict resolution/management, including restorative approaches to conflict, and three to five years of related experience preferably in a post-secondary environment. Experience in policy development and university administration and an in-depth understanding of procedural fairness is required. The position pays $65,463 to $88,567 and applications are due July 8, 2016. (Career Beacon.)
Dalhousie had an Ombuds Office staffed by students on a part-time basis that closed in 2013. After a very public scandal involving misogynistic and violent comments about female students in the graduate dentistry program, a university task force recommended the reinstatement of a robust Ombuds program.
