Mediation Training (40-Hours)

Training Location: Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute, University of Maryland
4500 Paint Branch Parkway, College Park, MD

This training is designed to teach participants to apply sound mediation practices and principles while managing/resolving disputes of any type (workplace, community, etc.). Participants will learn to utilize a full range of effective mediation skills, techniques, and strategies. This training meets the requirements of Maryland Rule 17-106(a) (1-5) and is approved for CLE credits from VA, PA and NC.

Attend this seminar if you want to:
- Complete the training to become a mediator and/or enhance your current practice with these skills.
- Learn to utilize a full range of effective mediation skills, techniques, and strategies.
- Understand the intricacies of the mediation process.
- Understand the application of mediation theory and practice.
- Acquire the confidence to utilize mediation skills in a variety of conflicts.

- Overview of the dispute resolution field and the various dispute resolution processes
- Overview of the stages of the mediation process
- Purpose and content of the mediator’s opening statement
- Understand why the parties need uninterrupted time
- Understand the importance of and how to gather information
- Understand the importance of and how to clarify and prioritize the parties’ issues
- Understand the importance of using caucus as a tool
- Distinguish between positions and interests
- Understand what an impasse is and which techniques to utilize to break various impasses
- Write an effective agreement
- Overview of mediator ethics and model standards of practice
- Factors that influence behavior and are instrumental in effectuating settlements
