Reports to Director of Harvard Negotiation & Mediation Clinical Program. Will work closely with the Director to expand the school’s innovative program in negotiation, mediation, and dispute systems design. This will include supporting long range planning, assisting in annual budgeting, and creating new opportunities for the clinic staff to connect theory to practice, generate and capture new theory, and improve knowledge capture, transfer, and dissemination. Will improve efforts at publicity and reaching out to clinic alumni. Will work closely with staff and students of the Harvard Mediation Program to enhance clinical supervision of students in mediation. Will have special responsibility for spearheading a new clinic initiative related to facilitation and political dialogue. Subject to faculty approval as a Lecturer on Law, will teach the classroom component of the clinical program during the Spring semester and, in consultation with the Director, will teach a second negotiation/mediation-related course during the Fall semester. Duties teaching these courses will include course planning, preparation and delivery and feedback to students. With the Director and in collaboration with the rest of the clinic team, the Assistant Director will be responsible for developing student projects and for building and maintaining client relationships. Will supervise and mentor students, including meeting regularly to discuss developments in their projects, and providing regular, detailed feedback.
Must have earned J.D. at least 3 years ago, experience with the theory and practice of mediation, negotiation, dispute systems design, and ADR as well as experience in organizational management and administration.
3+ years of business and/or legal experience with focus on mediation and dispute resolution desirable as is some experience in clinical legal setting and direct supervision and mentoring of young attorneys or professionals. Should be passionate about working with students and about developing the field in negotiation, mediation, facilitation, dispute systems design, and ADR. Superior interpersonal skills, proven capacity to work as a team member, sound judgment, an entrepreneurial attitude, exceptional ethical standards, strong mentoring ability, deft management skills, and outstanding writing and verbal skills required. A proven track record working in complex and large organizations a plus.
