ACR Annual Conference Keynote Announcement
October 9-11, 2013 | Minneapolis, MN
Grande Lum

“Helping parties through difficult conflicts is what I have devoted my career to and what I am passionate about. In communities throughout the country there are going to be issues that cause tension, and I feel honored and privileged to be leading an agency created explicitly to resolve such conflicts.”

Those are the words of Grande Lum, the new Director of the United States Department of Justice Community Relations Program. ACR is pleased to announce he will be the Keynote speaker at the 2013 Annual Conference, Making Peace Happen: New Normals, in Minneapolis Minnesota October 9-11.

The Community Relations Service (CRS) works with local government officials, community leaders, and law enforcement to reduce tensions arising from issues of race, color, and national origin. CRS also works with local communities in support of their efforts to prevent and respond to violent hate crimes committed on the basis of race, color, national origin, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, and disability. CRS has 15 offices throughout the country, and provides its services free of charge to the parties.

Mr. Lum was appointed by President Obama in 2012 to lead America’s peacemaking agency. Mr. Lum appropriately brings a background in alternative dispute resolution to the Department of Justice. He is a previous director for the Center for Negotiation and Dispute Resolution at University of California Hastings School of Law where he was also a clinical law professor. While there, the Center received recognition from the U. S. News and World Report as being a top law school dispute resolution program, the first time the school had been so honored. Director Lum was also co-manager of the Stanford Law School Alternative Dispute Resolution externship program.

Director Lum has been a partner or principal of numerous mediation, dispute resolution training, and conflict management endeavors. A published author, his works include The Negotiation Fieldbook and Getting Schools to Yes, a DVD.

Mr. Lum currently serves on the Board of Overseers of the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program and has served on the Boards of Directors of the Peninsula Conflict Resolution Center and the Center for Asian American Media. He was also a member of the California State Bar Association Committee on Alternative Dispute Resolution, and was a fellow at the Gould Center for Conflict Resolution at Stanford. Director Lum received his B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley, and his J.D. from Harvard Law School.

The ACR Annual Conference Committee is pleased to have such a distinguished representative in the field of dispute resolution as our Keynote speaker.
