AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka offered to mediate NFL's new collective bargaining agreement. While this seems like a kind offer, it may leave some mediators scratching their head. The head of the NFL Players Association sits on the executive council of the AFL-CIO, which may cause some concern with neutrality. Not surprisingly, the NFL rejected Trunka's offer.

"No on e would suggest that the owner of an NFL club or a member of its board could serve as an effective, neutral mediator. The same is true of the leader of the AFL-CIO. The NFL Players Association is itself a member of the AFL-CIO and the head of the NFLPA sits on the AFL-CIO's board,'' NFL spokesman Greg Aiello wrote Thursday in an e-mail to the AP.

It will be interesting to see how such a conflict is resolved, or not resolved (but hopefully resolved) in the coming year.
