God in the Process: Is There a Place for Religion in Conflict Resolution Processes?

Does God belong in conflict resolution processes? The field of conflict resolution has long worked to keep processes neutral and value-free, but there is an increasing demand for value-laden processes, or at least processes that take faith seriously, like Christian mediation, Ho'oponopono, and Harvard's Insight GNII (Global Negotiation Insight Institute).

This webinar consists of two parts. The first will look at the role of religion and spirituality in dispute resolution processes

-- what are the risks, what is the potential, can we include faith and support the self-determination of parties – summarizing the debate so far in the field.

The second part explores new ideas on how to include religion, faith, spirituality into our processes safely by exploring the integration of mind, heart, body/somatics, and spirit which maximizes mediator presence in the room, and drawing on approaches from psychology that protect party self determination.

About the presenters:

Dr. Goldberg has been active in the field of Conflict Resolution for over 25 years. She has expertise in individual, organizational and multi-party conflict and has done work around controversial issues like pro-life/pro-choice activism, institutional racism, and Native American land claim conflict. She is a long time specialist in cross-cultural and diversity work, is now focusing on designing and providing a new model, Wisdom Conflict Resolution, which combines emotional, somatic, and spiritual practices with classic mediation. She is currently an Assistant Professor for the Conflict Analysis and Dispute Resolution Department at Salisbury University, in Salisbury, MD.

Brian Blanke:

Brian Blancke, Ph.D., is a content consultant for Vantage Partners, a consulting firm that specializes in negotiation and relationship management. Dr. Blancke has been involved in the field of conflict resolution for over twenty years as a mediator, case manager, trainer, and adjunct professor (for Creighton's online masters program).

I was looking to see if anyone had commented on the forum, but was unable to find anyone's specific comments. I just wanted to share some short thoughts on how God definitely could be utilized in conflict resolution processes. For example, the New Testament shows Christ as being the ultimate individual to look to for examples in conflict resolution as he is referred to as "the mediator." Beyond that, professionals could use Christ's teachings, such as, "As I have loved you, love one another." Such mentality may be beneficial in helping resolve disputes. Indeed, there will still be disagreement, but if we are to utilize the principles that Christ speaks of, we may indirectly involve God in the process. Moreover, if individuals were more comfortable talking about God in their negotiations, it could be used as a way to facilitate mutual beliefs or communication. Additionally, using prayer may also be a great way to start the discussion as it may be recognized as a way to seek mutually beneficial outcomes.
